We have a tremendous amount of history on Ranching!
The Ranching Story

The first newcomers to the Cariboo Chilcotin area of BC were fur traders. They left few footprints. The Great Cariboo Gold Rush, however, began in 1858, and while it lasted less then a decade, it opened the doors for the cattlemen.

Cattlemen won the west! Cariboo ranches established in the early days of the gold rush are still in operation today. Alkali Lake Ranch is on record as the oldest beef cattle producer in Western Canada!

Here are a few photos of the many photos that are on display
that depict the ranching history in British Columbia!

Here is a video that the museum has for sale about the ranching industry in BC - past and present!

The Museum's Ranching Video
Cattle ranching has been a mainstay in the Cariboo Chilcotin economy ever since the first herd of cattle arrived in the 1860's. Generation after generation of ranchers have been caring for the grasslands that feed the cattle year after year.

This video explores both the present and the history of the ranching industry in BC by featuring some of the Cariboo Chilcotin's oldest ranches.

As we guide you through the yearly cycle of the ranching business, you'll see that day in and day out, ranchers are truly living with the land.

"We are really borrowing from the next generation. We have the responsibility to keep the land in a good state, or if we can, improve the state it's in now."
                          Felix Schellenberg, Rafter 25 Ranch
